The 2009 Clarence Hewlett Memorial (aka the 2009 US National Open) will take place in Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, on August 29 and 30, at the Sheraton University City hotel.
Sheraton Philadelphia University City Hotel 36th and Chestnut Streets Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19104 http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/Othello2009 Reservations: 800-596-0369 Phone: 215-387-8000
Reservations: we've got a block of 14 rooms reserved for us, until the end of July. So if you're planning to come and want to stay at the hotel, make sure you place the reservation by *July 29, 2009*. After that - no discount.
Use this URL to book rooms: http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/Othello2009
If you want to book by phone, make sure you specify the event (Othello 2009 US Open) to receive the discount. The total price should be 138$ per night, including fees and taxes. For people who don't stay at the hotel, parking will be available for about 8$/day. Again, you should mention the event at the reception to get this rate.
The hotel itself is located on the University of Pennsylvania Campus, within 12 minutes walking distance from the 30th Street Train Station.
A car ride from the airport is roughly 30 minutes long. Alternatively, you can also take the Septa R1 train from the airport to University City Station and then walk from there to the hotel (10 minutes). I encourage you to consult the Google maps and the SEPTA schedules http://www.septa.org/service/rr_schedules.html
David Parsons has kindly agreed to direct the tournament.
On Saturday there will be seven rounds. Pairings will use accelerated Swiss System pairings. The tentative schedule for the seven rounds is 9:30AM, 10:45AM, 12:00AM, 2:00PM, 3:15PM, 4:30PM, and 6:00PM. The bottom line: please show up by 9:15 in the Chestnut Room :).
Sunday will be a round-robin playoff of the top four players...six rounds also starting at 9:30AM. If two or more people tie for fourth/fifth on the first day, a playoff will be held between the two players with the top tiebreaks.
Time control is 30 minutes per game per side. Tiebreaks on the first day will be Brightwell Coefficients. Tiebreaks on the second day will be disk differentials. We're going to keep the rule from last year that a person can not lose on time in a position for which neither player had any legal move options remaining in the game.
As always, we are extending this invitation to international players as well. We Love International Players!
Do not hesitate to contact us should you require additional information. Also, we'd appreciate it if you could let us know if you're coming.
Looking forward to seeing you in Philadelphia, The organizing committee, Sharon Katzman, Jian Cai and Vlad Petric |
